Comparative Historical Studies of Christianity in Modern East Asia

The introduction and increasing presence of Christianity in modern East Asia have brought dramatic changes to the religious landscapes of East Asian societies. Historical studies of Christianity in each of these East Asian societies have accumulated rich materials and insightful analyses. However, it has been rare to see comparative historical studies across East Asian societies. To facilitate comparison, we have applied a scheme of Contextual and Agency factors and combed through each society, decade by decade, from pre-1900 to 2020, and compiled this database of Christianity in East Asian Societies (CHEAS).

We welcome scholars who have conducted research on the history of Christianity in an East Asian society to contribute to and/or utilize this database. Please see the scheme’s questionnaires.
